It seems Xiaomi is not in a mood of stopping producing budget mobile phones for the Indian consumers this year 2017. Starting with Redmi Note 4, it launched Redmi 4 and Redmi 4A. Later they launched the Mi Max 2, Mi A1 and the Mi Mix 2, allowing users to choose from a large set of devices according to their needs. Afterwards, they launched the Mi A1 with dual cameras which had the portrait mode.
But that’s not the end. Xiaomi recently launched a new series made for those who love to take selfies. Their new series, namely Redmi Y, specializes in front camera, with a front-facing flash, to take the best selfies. Xiaomi unveiled two devices on their Y series, the Redmi Y1, and the Y1 lite.
According to Xiaomi, the Y stands for You or Youth. Both the devices are budget smartphones with their prices less than 10k. The Redmi Y1 has a whopping 16MP front camera and retails for just Rs8999 for the 3GB+32GB variant. There is also a 4GB+64GB variant which costs Rs10999. The Y1 lite is a comparatively cheaper device, which comes with just one variant 2GB+16GB and costs Rs6999.
The Xiaomi Redmi Y series will go on sale from November 8 onwards on Amazon India and Mi.com from 12 pm onwards. They also announced that the Redmi Y series will also be available across all their offline partner stores like Ezone, Croma Retail etc. They also announced a new offline partner Reliance Digital. All redmi series phones will soon be available on Reliance Digital stores also.
So, those were the highlights. Let’s dive in and check out the features of both the phones.
Redmi Y1 Features:
The Redmi Y1 is the higher end variant between the two sets of Redmi Y devices.
The USP of it is a 16MP front camera with f/2.0 large aperture and 76.4-degree wide angle lens. It also has a front-facing flash that will enable users to take shots in proper lighting when required. The front camera has 36 smart beautify profiles with real-time beautification that will help further. Xiaomi claims that you should be able to do better video calls with this front camera. So, whether taking selfies, groupfies or video calls, Redmi Y1’s front camera has got you covered.
Coming to the rear camera, it supports a 13MP camera with f/2.2 aperture and it supports phase detection autofocus, that helps to lock focus and take shots quickly. Xiaomi has integrated this similar camera on many of its devices. Xiaomi claims that this camera will help you to take better shots in the low light. It also supports panorama, burst-mode, face recognition and real-time filters which will enhance the photography experience further.
Let’s come to the build. It has a 5.5-inch 2.5D display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The screen resolution is 1280 x 720pixels. Like many other Xiaomi devices, it has a fingerprint sensor on the back. There is an IR Blaster on the top of it as well that you can use to control thousands of Indian Electronic Devices. Its weight is just 153 grams.
Underneath, it is powered by Snapdragon 435 chipset with Adreno 505 graphics, a 1.4Ghz Octa-Core processor. This one thing disappointed me a bit. Xiaomi didn’t use the Snapdragon 625 in these phones, despite its love towards that chipset. Yes, I can understand it did that to keep up with its low price, but still. Anyways, it comes with two storage and RAM options, the 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB.
There’s another big news, it supports External SD Card in addition to two nano sim slots. So, you no longer need to worry about using two sims and memory card together. Both the sim supports 4G but you can only use 4G in only one sim at a time. Yes, VoLTE is supported native.
Coming to the battery, it supports 3080mah battery.
One last thing, There is a Mi Video app (which is a part of MIUI 9) and it supports a lot of video formats including AMR, FLAC, XVID, MKV, AAC along with all the regular formats like MP4, WAV etc.
Redmi Y1 Lite Features:
Redmi Y1 lite is the lower variant of the Redmi Y series and costs 2k lesser than the lower gig of Redmi Y1. So, what’s less here?
Firstly, they said Redmi Y series stands for You and Youth, giving better selfie capabilities. But don’t get fooled here, though the Redmi Y1 supports a better selfie camera, the Y1 lite front camera is just 5MP with f/2.0 aperture, similar to many other Redmi devices. It has the other features like 36 beautify profiles, selfie countdown, face recognition and video calling support.
The rear camera of Redmi Y1 Lite is same as Redmi Y1. It is a 13MP shooter.
The build is also exactly the same. I am not going into the details here.
The chipset is Snapdragon 425, which is even lower than the Redmi Y1’s Snapdragon 435. Its a 1.4Ghz Quad Core Processor with Adreno 308 Graphics. It has 2GB RAM and 16GB storage.
It also supports 2+1 Sim and SD Card slot. Both the sims support 4G, however, you can use 4G in only one at a time. Native VoLTE is supported as well. Its battery is also 3080mah.
The rest of the things are all the same.

Xiaomi Redmi Y1 / Y1 Lite Honest Opinions:
Well, I like the Redmi Y1 due to the fact it has the selfie camera with advanced features. I feel it may come useful for selfie takers. But other than that its specs fail to impress me. If given the choice, I will rather spend some bucks more to get the Redmi Note 4 instead. And thumbs down to the Redmi Y1 Lite, I still don't understand why did they make that device. It doesn't have any impressive specs at all.
- Good Selfie Camera
- Dedicated SD Card Slot with two nano sim support
- Y1 Lite has no impressive specs at all
