So you have bought the Amazon Echo Dot and wondering how to properly set it up?
In fact, among all the Amazon Echo Devices the Echo Dot needs a special treatment due to the fact that it needs an External Speakers. And you need to connect it to both your Wifi Hotspot too.
Don’t worry, I am here to help you out. Today, in this post, I am going to write about How to configure and Set up your Amazon Echo Dot properly.
Before I start, those who don’t know about Amazon Echo, let me introduce it to you first.
The Echo set of devices are mostly smart speakers with Alexa Voice Assistant inbuilt. It will help you to play your favorite music, book cabs, book food orders, tell news updates, check the sports score, tell weather info, track flights and trains etc and much more, just by using your voice. If you have IOT devices, it will also help you to control them.
There are three devices: The Echo Dot, the Echo, and the Echo Plus.
The Echo Dot is the lowest of all the three variants, which just contains the Alexa and a tiny speaker. The Echo has a large speaker included making sure your device can be heard from the whole room. The Echo Plus has a smart home hub in addition to the Alexa and the speakers. This ensures you can control your smart devices centrally without needing a separate hub for each of them.
All these three devices are available on request. You need to request an invitation on Amazon to get yours. Also, as an early adopter of Amazon Alexa, you will get a 30% discount on their MRPs.
The Echo Dot generally costs Rs4499, but it is available at a discounted rate of Rs3199.
The Echo generally costs Rs9999, but it is available at a discounted rate of Rs6999.
The Echo Plus generally costs Rs14999, but it is available at a discounted rate of Rs10499.
So, you got your Amazon Echo delivered. You open it, and you get the Echo, the power adapter, the USB Cable, and the warranty cards etc. What to do next? Let’s find out. Without wasting much time, let’s jump to our topic of discussion.
Step by Step Guide to Set Up Amazon Echo Dot:
At first, make sure your Wifi Router is working properly and you have a Wifi Signal around.
Install and Open your Amazon Alexa App. It will ask you to Sign in to your Amazon Account, Sign in with your credentials.
Now, You will come to the home page, which will look somewhat similar to this.
Click on Customize Alexa. It will take you to the Settings. Click on Set up a New Device.
Now it will show you a list of Alexa Powered devices. Choose Echo Dot.
Next, it will ask you to choose your preferred language. Choose English (Indian) to get the best experience.
On the next page, you will see this: Begin Echo Dot Setup. Click Connect to Wifi.
Now, connect the USB Cable to the Amazon Echo Dot and the other end to the Power Adapter. Switch it on.
You will see blue lights flashing in a circular fashion over the Echo Dot. Give it some time, until it says, Amazon Echo is Ready. (or something similar. I forgot the exact phrase what it says). But it will give you a sign that your Echo Dot is ready for customization. And it will flash an orange light ring, denoting that it is ready.
Click on Continue.
Well, contrary to most cases, where your Echo Device connects to Wifi directly, here, at first you need to connect your smartphone to your Echo Dot via Wifi. Meaning, your Echo Dot will start a Hotspot, and you need to connect your Smartphone to that.
It will automatically connect, but in case it fails, it will ask you to manually connect to your Echo Dot. In my case, it asked to manually connect.
To manually connect your phone to Echo Dot, simply go to your Wifi Settings on your device, and search for Wifi Network with the name ‘Amazon-XXX’ (where XXX denotes number). It will be an open wifi network. Find it and connect to it.
Note that your existing wifi network connection with your Router will go away. So, you will have no internet during this period.
Wait till it connects. After it is connected, it will confirm.
Now that your Echo Dot has connected to your smartphone, it is time for your Echo Dot to connect to your Wifi Network. On the next screen, it will search for the available wifi networks, and ask you to select the appropriate network.
Now, it will ask for the Password. Enter it. You can also optionally choose to save your Wifi Password with Amazon.
Now it will take some time to connect properly.
Well, you are not done yet.
Remember, your phone is still connected to Echo Dot and has no internet access. You need to disconnect from that Wifi Network and reconnect to your own Wifi Network.
Finally, it will show you a confirmation message that Echo is now connected.
As you know that your Echo Dot does not have a powerful speaker, so you need an external speaker to be connected with it. Bluetooth Speakers are preferred for a Wire-Free action, else you can use Aux Cable to connect your speaker with Alexa.
It will now ask you to choose how you want to connect Echo Dot to your external speakers.
I had Bose Soundlink III Bluetooth Speakers with me, so I will proceed with Bluetooth connection.
Choose Bluetooth or Audio Cable, whichever mode you want. I have Bluetooth speakers, so I am going to proceed with that.
It will now search for available Bluetooth Devices. Choose your Speakers from the list of results.
After this step, your Amazon Echo Dot setup is fully complete. Now you can either play your favorite music directly or proceed to set up custom skills for your Alexa.
You can find thousands of skills to choose from, from the Top Left Menu > Skills Page.
Skills are the life of Alexa. From reading out today’s headlines, weather report, sports score updates, playing music, radio, creating lists, reminders to ordering food, ordering from Amazon.in, booking cabs it can do pretty much everything. You can check flight fares, track train status, play games and much more stuff.
The skills are divided categorically so that you can explore whatever you want. Try them out.
